President Trump’s Mass Deportation Plan Targets Chicago, Sparks Protests Nationwide

Immigration enforcement is intensifying across the United States this week as President Donald Trump’s administration signals Chicago will be the next focus of sweeping deportation actions.

“Absolutely. You can expect action in most sanctuary cities across the country,” said federal immigration officials, echoing Trump’s vow to increase ICE operations.

Over the weekend, the president ramped up his rhetoric against Chicago, the nation’s third largest city. He posted an AI-generated meme featuring the phrase “shypocalypse now” and the caption “I love the smell of deportations in the morning,” alongside a reference to the Department of War. Facing criticism, Trump insisted his goal was not war, but public safety. “We’re not going to war. We’re going to clean up our cities so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war. That’s common sense,” he said.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker dismissed the president’s social media posts as “fake news” while reiterating opposition to federal crackdowns in the state.

The heightened enforcement has fueled protests in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., while Boston Mayor Michelle Wu criticized a new large-scale ICE operation targeting what Homeland Security called “the worst of the worst” criminal undocumented immigrants in Massachusetts. “They are attacking our communities in order to try to push forward their own authoritarian agenda,” Wu said.

The controversy follows a massive ICE raid last week at a Hyundai plant in Georgia, where 475 workers were arrested, including about 300 South Koreans expected to be deported on a chartered flight. The raid drew international backlash, especially as South Korea remains a key trade partner under Trump’s economic agenda.

Defending the operation, Trump said Sunday night, “ICE was doing right because they were here illegally. But we do have to work something out where we bring in experts so that our people can be trained so that they can do it themselves.”
