California Minimum Wage to Increase to $16.90 in 2026
California's minimum wage will rise by 40 cents to $16.90 per hour starting January 1, 2026, following the state's annual inflation adjustment process.
The increase stems from a state law requiring the Department of Finance to review inflation annually and adjust wages accordingly. This year, the department reported a 2.5% increase in the consumer price index, triggering the wage adjustment from the current $16.50 per hour.
The adjustment mechanism is designed to keep minimum wages aligned with rising costs of living. State officials characterize the increase as modest but necessary to maintain purchasing power for low-wage workers.
However, some financial advisors have expressed concern about the cumulative impact on small businesses across California, which must absorb the additional labor costs.
