Labor Department Revises Job Growth Down by Nearly 1 Million

The U.S. economy created significantly fewer jobs in early 2025 than initially reported, according to new Labor Department data that has revised job growth downward by 911,000 positions through March.

The substantial revision, released Tuesday, suggests the labor market was weaker than previously understood and raises questions about the economy's underlying stability. The downward adjustment represents the largest revision on record dating back to 2002 and is more than 50% higher than last year's comparable adjustment.

On a monthly basis, the revisions indicate that average job growth was 76,000 positions lower than initially reported during the period under review.

The timing of the revised data is significant, as most of the timespan covered in the report predates President Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025. This suggests that labor market conditions were already deteriorating before the administration began implementing tariff policies against U.S. trading partners.
