US Auto Industry Pays $1.4 Billion in July Tariffs

American carmakers faced significant financial impact from new tariffs in July, paying over $1.4 billion to import vehicles and parts from Canada and Mexico, according to data from Anderson Economic Group.

The payments stem from 25% tariffs on cars and automotive parts that took effect in April and May. Major automakers including General Motors, Stellantis, Ford, Tesla, and Hyundai were hit hardest despite manufacturing most vehicles domestically.

These companies rely heavily on cross-border supply chains, importing components from Canadian and Mexican facilities to support US assembly operations. In July alone, the automakers paid nearly $300 million specifically on imported car parts.

The tariff burden highlights the integrated nature of North American auto manufacturing, where vehicles assembled in the United States depend on components sourced across the continent.
