Eastern Coachella Valley Dirt Roads to Be Paved in $4.57 Million Project
Residents in the eastern Coachella Valley will soon see major improvements as dirt roads across more than a dozen communities are set to be paved. The effort is part of a $4.57 million joint project between Riverside County and the South Coast Air Quality Management District designed to enhance air quality and quality of life for families in the region.
The project will directly benefit residents living in rural areas, including mobile home parks in Mecca, Thermal, and Oasis. Many of these neighborhoods have long dealt with unpaved roads that contribute to dust and harmful emissions. County officials say paving will significantly reduce PM10 emissions, the fine particles residents are exposed to daily as they drive in and out of their homes.
Riverside County’s Transportation Department will manage the construction work, with the first phase set to begin in 2026. This initial phase will cover 14 properties, prioritized with input from local community members, and will take about 24 months to complete.
Supervisor Manuel Perez noted that while the project represents a major step forward, challenges remain. “Transportation, access to health care, the list goes on and on,” Perez said. “However, this small victory will now allow people to have cleaner air that they can breathe because they will actually be walking or driving on a paved road.”
The project underscores the importance of addressing long-standing infrastructure needs in underserved communities and represents a milestone in improving both health outcomes and living conditions in the eastern Coachella Valley.
