Indio Breaks Ground on 9/11 Memorial Featuring World Trade Center Steel

This morning, dozens gathered at Miles Avenue Park in Indio for a solemn groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of a new 9/11 memorial. The centerpiece of the project, set to be unveiled next year, will be a 12-foot piece of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. Renderings show the monument adorned with small star-like lights, symbolizing the thousands of lives lost during the attacks.

The ceremony opened with a prayer, followed by remarks from city council members who highlighted the importance of the landmark for both residents and visitors. For some, the event carried especially personal meaning. Shirley Schumann, a Coachella Valley resident who worked on the 49th floor of the South Tower, recalled her narrow escape that morning 24 years ago. Also present was Roland Cook, a K9 search specialist with the Palm Springs Fire Department who was dispatched to Ground Zero in the aftermath. Cook reflected on the early search efforts, saying his team detected signs of life, though survivors could not be saved. For both Schumann and Cook, the future memorial ensures that the memory of 9/11 endures.
