Water Wise Wednesday: Slipper Flower Highlighted as September’s Desert-Friendly Plant

Water Wise Wednesday, brought to you by the Coachella Valley Water District, is spotlighting a desert-friendly plant perfect for September: the slipper flower. Joining us to share more is Lorraine Garcia, Manager of Communication at CVWD.

“The slipper flower is beautiful, with upright, wavy stems that love full sun but also do well in partial shade and in containers,” Garcia explained. While not a native plant, local nurseries carry slipper flowers and other water-efficient options for desert landscaping.

Gardeners and homeowners looking to replace less efficient plants will find the slipper flower a great alternative. “It’s water-efficient, making it a perfect choice for anyone who wants to get their hands dirty while creating a sustainable garden,” Garcia said.

For those interested in learning more about water-wise landscaping, CVWD offers an online resource guide. “Visit cvwd.org/conservation to find our full landscaping guide for desert-friendly plants, along with other conservation tips,” Garcia added.

The slipper flower is just one example of how residents can create a colorful, low-maintenance, and environmentally responsible landscape.
