Coachella Cancels Fiestas Patrias Amid Immigration Enforcement Concerns

The city of Coachella has announced the cancellation of its annual Fiestas Patrias celebration, an event traditionally held at Las Flores Park to honor Hispanic heritage with live music, food trucks, rides, and family activities.

Officials explained the decision was made out of concern for public safety following increased federal immigration enforcement activity in the region and recent changes tied to the Supreme Court. “This year, due to ICE and all the activity that’s happening, we felt it would be most responsible to celebrate the El Grito ceremony in a scaled-down way,” a city representative said. “We felt it was the best way to celebrate without sacrificing the safety of our residents.”

While the Fiestas Patrias festival will not be held this year, the El Grito ceremony — which marks Mexico’s Independence Day — will still go forward. Instead of Las Flores Park, the event will be hosted at Fantasy Springs.

The scaled-down celebration aims to preserve the cultural significance of El Grito while ensuring families can attend without fear or concern.
