Lawmakers Reassess Security After Charlie Kirk Shooting
The shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah is raising urgent questions about security at political events. Leaders from both parties are rethinking how they gather with supporters, citing heightened risks in open-air settings.
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has canceled her speaking engagements for the weekend, while Republican Representative Nancy Mace announced she is canceling all outdoor events for the foreseeable future. Both cited safety concerns following the attack that took place on the campus of Utah Valley University.
David Kohlmeier, a retired officer with the NYPD and Henderson Police Department who has worked security details for presidential and high-profile events, says a troubling pattern is emerging. “There’s been a common thread in some of these recent attacks—they’ve taken place in open-air areas,” he explained.
Kohlmeier emphasized the need for thorough checks of rooftops and elevated positions before public events. Without those precautions, he predicts most high-profile gatherings may be moved indoors under tighter security protocols.
The reassessment comes as law enforcement and political leaders weigh how to balance accessibility for constituents with the pressing need for safety in an increasingly volatile climate.
