Man Killed During ICE Traffic Stop in Chicago Suburb; Officer Injured

A man was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer during a traffic stop Friday morning in Franklin Park, Illinois, about 20 miles west of Chicago. The Department of Homeland Security identified the man as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant.

According to DHS, Villegas-Gonzalez resisted arrest and attempted to flee. He struck an officer with his vehicle and dragged him a “significant distance.” The officer, whose name has not yet been released, sustained severe injuries but is reported to be in stable condition.

Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement praising the officer’s response. “He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement. We are praying for his speedy recovery,” she said. McLaughlin also criticized social media content that encourages resistance to law enforcement, warning that it endangers both officers and communities.

The incident comes amid heightened immigration enforcement in the region. Earlier this week, federal officials announced “Operation Midway Blitz,” targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records in Illinois. DHS reported that the operation has already led to arrests involving convictions for assault and driving under the influence.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the incident “troubling” and urged transparency. “The people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.

The FBI confirmed it is assisting with the investigation, adding that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Agents were seen processing the scene Friday afternoon.

Local leaders expressed concern about the escalation. State Representative Norma Hernandez said ICE’s aggressive tactics are spreading fear in communities. “The Trump administration declared war on American communities here in Illinois and this is what this looks like — to kill innocent people, to ruin families, and to break away families,” Hernandez said.

The investigation remains ongoing as federal and local authorities review the circumstances of the traffic stop.
