Palm Desert’s El Paseo Roadwork Nears Completion Ahead of Peak Season Events
Months of road construction on Palm Desert’s El Paseo are finally nearing completion, with city officials saying the project should wrap up by the end of September. The effort was launched to completely rebuild the street, which city leaders noted was never originally designed to handle the amount of traffic it now carries. Crews stripped the road down nearly 10 inches to the dirt before reconstructing it, a fix expected to keep the corridor in good condition for the next 20 years.
The timing of the work—right before the Coachella Valley’s busy peak season—was a challenge for drivers and businesses alike. Detours, lane closures, and limited parking left some shops reporting a 25 to 30 percent dip in business, while others managed to avoid significant losses thanks to alternative access points and rear parking.
Despite the disruptions, the city says the project is finishing on schedule, with fresh pavement already complete and crews now installing raised crosswalks at midblock crossings. Additional improvements include sealing parking lots in nearby plazas to ensure easier access for visitors.
With the final touches underway, Palm Desert officials expect El Paseo to be ready ahead of two of the city’s biggest events, the Golf Cart Parade and Paint El Paseo Pink. For business owners and residents, the completion of this work means smoother travel, safer crossings, and long-term relief from road issues that have been building for years.
