Rancho Mirage Library Celebrates National Library Card Sign-Up Month

September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory is reminding the community that libraries are more than just a place for books—they’re gateways to learning, imagination, and endless resources.

“If knowledge is power, then the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory is a powerhouse,” said NBC Palm Springs reporter Kai Beach. Senior librarian Deanne Diegel explained that the library offers something for everyone. Beyond books, visitors can access CDs, telescopes, internet services, movies, programs, and more.

“We have something for everybody no matter what your interest is. We will have a book, a movie, a program—anything that will entice you to come spend some time with us,” Diegel said.

Library cards are free to anyone with a valid California ID. Residents can apply in person by filling out a short form or begin the process online. With a card, users gain access to a wide variety of resources, including DVDs, e-books, and digital services.

This year’s American Library Association theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” highlights how libraries provide opportunities that can transform lives. With millions of American adults still struggling with basic literacy and math skills, the reminder of libraries’ vital role is more important than ever.

Parents at the Rancho Mirage Library also recognize the impact of reading, sharing how books help ignite their children’s imagination and open their minds to new ideas.
