Doctors Warn of Surge in E-Bike and Scooter Injuries Among Youth
The American College of Surgeons is urging caution as electric bikes and scooters gain popularity, citing a nationwide surge in injuries, particularly affecting children and teenagers.
Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children has documented a 250% increase in emergency room visits from e-bike and e-scooter accidents. Dr. Marc Levy, a pediatric trauma surgeon at the facility, says trauma alerts for these incidents have become increasingly common.
National Impact by the Numbers
More than 20,000 people are injured annually while riding electric bikes across the United States, with approximately 3,000 requiring hospitalization, according to the American College of Surgeons.
Helmet Requirements
Dr. Levy reports that many injured riders either wore no helmet or used inappropriate protection for their vehicle's speed. He recommends higher-rated helmets for faster e-bikes and e-scooters, noting that level 3 helmets rated for speeds up to 28 mph provide better protection with full shell coverage and harder materials compared to standard bicycle helmets.
