Trump Creates Federal Task Force to Combat Crime in Memphis

President Donald Trump signed an executive memorandum Monday establishing a federal task force to address crime in Memphis, Tennessee, marking an expansion of his domestic law enforcement initiatives.

The task force will operate similarly to the federal response Trump deployed in Washington, D.C., which involved deploying thousands of National Guard troops to the nation's capital. The Memphis initiative will coordinate multiple federal agencies, including the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The federal intervention has created a political divide in Tennessee. While Republican Governor Bill Lee has welcomed the federal assistance, Memphis Mayor Paul Young, a Democrat, has not publicly endorsed the plan. The Shelby County Democratic Party held a press conference Monday opposing any National Guard deployment to the city.

The Memphis task force represents part of Trump's broader strategy to address urban crime through federal intervention. The president announced Monday that he is planning similar action in Chicago as the next target for expanded federal law enforcement efforts.
