Cinema Diverse Celebrates 18th Anniversary at Palm Springs Cultural Center
Cinema Diverse, the Palm Springs LGBTQ+ film festival, is marking its 18th anniversary this month at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The event, which organizers say could draw between five and six thousand people, begins Thursday, September 18, and runs through September 28.
Michael Green, executive director of the Palm Springs Cultural Center, said this year’s festival is being celebrated as the “storyteller’s era.” That theme highlights the importance of film as storytelling and includes several oral history programs. Among them is the Cultural Center’s own film, “Rank and File,” which focuses on the stories of the silent generation and baby boomers growing up and coming out during a very different era.
“In our little nod to Taylor Swift, we’re calling it the storyteller’s era,” Green explained. “It’s about looking back at those experiences while also recognizing the ways in which they still resonate today.”
The opening night film, “Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day,” is described as an artistic black-and-white foreign film that was submitted by Chechnya as its entry for the Oscars. In addition to international titles, Cinema Diverse will showcase films from across the United States, reflecting a broad mix of perspectives and voices.
The festival continues through September 28 with screenings, panels, and community events, all hosted at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. Organizers say the event remains one of the Valley’s most significant cultural gatherings, celebrating diversity, storytelling, and the power of film.
