Community Calls for Better Street Lighting After Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Palm Springs

New details have emerged surrounding a tragic accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian in Palm Springs, raising urgent safety concerns among local residents. The Palm Springs Police Department confirmed that 29-year-old Raymond Olguin Jr., a resident of Palm Desert, was struck and killed just before 9 p.m. last night at the intersection of San Rafael Drive and Avenida Caballeros. The crash was fatal, and authorities say no signs of speeding were involved.

This intersection, locals say, has long been problematic — particularly after dark.

“Been here for about 10 to 15 years now, and yeah, this street has no lights. It’s definitely dark and a little bit treacherous at times,” said one longtime resident.

Lt. Gustavo Araiza of the Palm Springs Police Department says the city has seen 13 pedestrian-involved collisions in the past six months, a number that has raised alarms for both law enforcement and the community.

“Drivers can be distracted by anything,” Lt. Ariza explained. “But pedestrians also need to be aware — some go out running with headphones, or cross without looking. Eye contact and awareness are critical.”

He adds that while the desert’s clear skies and warm evenings often encourage outdoor activity, nighttime visibility remains a persistent challenge.

Residents have begun speaking out about the need for improved lighting in pedestrian areas.

“We appreciate not being flooded with light, but more lighting would be great — especially where people are walking,” said another local.

Police are reminding pedestrians to take proactive safety measures when out after dark, including wearing reflective clothing, avoiding distractions, and using designated crosswalks whenever possible.

“There are a lot of parts of the city that don’t have consistent street lighting. That can make it difficult for both drivers and pedestrians to see each other until it’s too late,” Lt. Ariza added.

As of now, the investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash continues, but police confirm there is no indication of speeding, and the driver involved is cooperating.

The death of Raymond Olguin Jr. is the latest in a troubling trend that underscores the importance of urban planning, infrastructure investment, and shared responsibility on the roads — especially at night.
