Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for First Time This Year

Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for First Time This Year

The Federal Reserve cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter-point on Wednesday, lowering the rate from 4.25%-4.50% to 4.00%-4.25% in response to a weakening labor market.

The committee voted 11-1 for the reduction, with newly appointed governor Stephen Miran dissenting in favor of a larger half-point cut.

Economic Drivers

Job growth has slowed dramatically, with August adding only 22,000 jobs and June showing previously unreported losses. The economy added 598,000 jobs in the first eight months of 2025, down from 1.4 million in the same period last year. Unemployment rose to 4.3% in August, the highest since September 2017 outside of the pandemic.

Inflation has increased from 2.3% in April to 2.9% in August, above the Fed's 2% target, coinciding with new tariff policies announced in April.

Impact

Lower rates reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers, potentially boosting hiring and spending. Markets expect additional cuts totaling three-quarters of a percentage point by year-end. Companies have reported slower consumer spending in recent earnings calls.
