Local College and Career Fair Inspires Middle School Students in Rancho Mirage to Plan for Their Futures

Tonight, a college and career fair took place for local students, aiming to provide them with valuable insights into their future educational and career options. Among those attending was Danica Connor, an eighth grader at James Workman Middle School, who sees the event as a crucial stepping stone.

Danica shared that her passion for radiology was sparked at a young age by watching the popular TV show Grey’s Anatomy. She believes that events like this demonstrate that it’s never too early for students to start considering their futures.

“I’m excited because I know that if people show up, there will be kids in middle school who get to learn more about their future,” Danica said. “Just getting a head start and an idea is great. You don’t have to fully commit now, but already knowing what you want to do will really help you be prepared in high school.”

The new principal of James Workman Middle School, who also co-chairs the college and career fair, highlighted the event’s focus on educating students about the paths available after high school.

“What I’ve seen over time is that families in our communities are starting to understand the importance of exploring all options, including financial aid,” the principal said. “We want to support students and parents early so they can plan ahead.”

According to district officials, about 60% of students in the area enroll in college after graduating from high school. Danica plans to be one of those students but recognizes the challenges ahead.

“I watch videos of college students talking about their struggles with getting in and handling financial aid,” she said. “It makes me worried, but it also motivates me to be prepared so I don’t have to face those problems blindly.”

With events like this fair, Rancho Mirage is helping students like Danica gain early knowledge and confidence to face their future educational journeys.
