Illinois Father With Stage Four Cancer Walks Daughter Down the Aisle in Hospital Wedding
An Illinois man battling stage four pancreatic cancer was given the chance to fulfill a dream—walking his daughter down the aisle.
Grace Benway and her fiancé, Thomas DeCourcy, had planned to marry next month in Colorado. But with her father Dan Benway’s health rapidly declining, the family worried he would not be able to make the trip.
In less than 24 hours, hospital staff and loved ones pulled together an impromptu wedding at Endeavor’s Northwest Community Hospital, where Dan is receiving treatment. The ceremony took place in a small garden surrounded by family and a large group of nurses and doctors who helped make the moment possible.
“There is just something special about watching a father walk his daughter down the aisle,” Grace said. “It means so much to him, and to us.”
Dan, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago, has endured countless rounds of chemotherapy. Though physically weakened, he was still able to take part in the emotional celebration.
Fighting back tears, Dan shared his joy in meeting his new son-in-law. “Oh my gosh, Tom and Grace… thank you. He’s going to be a great man for her.”
For Grace and Thomas, the wedding was about more than vows—it was about love, family, and creating a memory with a father who has shown extraordinary strength.
