Governor Newsom Signs Bills to Strengthen Protections for Immigrant Communities

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a package of five bills into law designed to expand protections for California’s immigrant communities. The governor says the legislation is aimed at pushing back against what he described as “secret police tactics” by federal law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The new laws prohibit federal officers from wearing masks or hiding their identities while carrying out enforcement actions in California. Supporters say the move is intended to increase transparency and accountability, ensuring immigrant families know who is approaching them during encounters with law enforcement.

The legislation also places new restrictions on where federal officers may operate. Moving forward, ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies will be required to obtain a judicial warrant or court order before entering classrooms, emergency rooms, or nonpublic areas of hospitals. Lawmakers emphasized that these protections are essential to keeping students, patients, and vulnerable community members safe from intimidation and disruption.
