Hashtag Holiday Calendar: Checkers Day, Pot Pie Fun, and a Tricky Pop Quiz
It’s time for the Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz, brought to you by One Coachella Valley. On this Tuesday, September 23, 2025, viewers were treated to a mix of quirky holidays and fun trivia.
First up: National Checkers Day. While it might sound like a celebration of the board game, the day actually honors a famous moment in political history. On this date in 1952, then–Senator Richard Nixon defended himself during a nationally televised speech, referencing a black-and-white cocker spaniel named Checkers that his family had been gifted. The moment became so iconic that the day is also recognized as Dogs in Politics Day.
Other holidays include the International Day of Sign Language, recognizing the more than 70 million deaf people around the world; National Snack Stick Day, highlighting the popular beef or pork snack; and National Great American Pot Pie Day, celebrating the comfort food classic. Locals were reminded that restaurants like the Daily Grill in Palm Desert even offer pot pies to take home and bake.
The keyword for today’s pop quiz was “pot,” and the questions didn’t disappoint. The first asked viewers to identify the Styx song with the lyrics, “So the story goes but somehow we missed out on that pot o’ gold.” The answer: “Come Sail Away.” The second question tested knowledge of world history, asking which country was ruled by the brutal dictator Pol Pot from 1975 to 1979. The correct answer: Cambodia.
With fun facts, history lessons, and a little music trivia, today’s Hashtag Holiday Calendar and Pop Quiz offered a lively break in the newscast and a chance to test viewers’ knowledge.
