President Trump Pushes America First Agenda at UN’s 80th General Assembly

World leaders are in New York this week for the 80th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly, where President Donald Trump delivered his first address since being re-elected.

The president’s speech reflected a familiar tone, combining campaign-style remarks with pointed criticisms of the UN’s effectiveness. “What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked, repeating his long-standing claim that the organization is falling short of its potential. He emphasized that, just months into his new administration, he views the U.S. as “the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

Key global issues dominated the agenda, including Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump said Moscow’s actions have hurt its own standing internationally. He also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss security guarantees and continued support for Ukraine.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza also highlighted sharp divisions. While more than 150 nations — including close U.S. allies such as Canada, Australia, France, and the United Kingdom — have recognized a Palestinian state in recent days, Trump rejected the move, arguing it undermines stability and emboldens Hamas.

His return to the UN underscored both continuity and change in his foreign policy posture: maintaining an America First agenda while navigating shifting global alliances and conflicts.
