FBI Returns Stolen Historical Map of Santa Fe to Mexico

A valuable historical map of Santa Fe, reported stolen more than a decade ago, has been returned to Mexico following a ceremony led by the FBI.

The map, titled "Villa de Santa Fe," was recovered and formally handed back to Mexican officials on September 23. FBI Albuquerque Special Agent in Charge Justin Garris said it was an honor to restore the artifact to the Mexican people, emphasizing the FBI’s commitment to returning stolen cultural and historical treasures.

Originally reported stolen in 2011, the map carries deep historical value. Research scholars at the ceremony highlighted its ties to the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the historic roadway that linked Mexico City to the San Juan Pueblo from the late 1500s through the 1880s. The route, recognized as a National Historic Trail in 2000, played a central role in trade, migration, and cultural exchange between Mexico and the American Southwest.

The map’s original title, "La Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís," translates to “the royal town of the holy faith of Saint Francis of Assisi.” Its return marks not just the recovery of a stolen artifact but also a restoration of heritage for the communities connected by the Camino Real.
