Palm Springs Unified Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Music, Dance, and Cultural Traditions

Classrooms across the Palm Springs Unified School District are alive with music, dance, art, and cultural traditions as students celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

The celebrations go beyond a date on the calendar. Students are engaging in performances, artwork, and conversations that highlight both history and community.

“It is very important to celebrate the Hispanic and Latin community since we have a huge population of Spanish speakers in our district,” said dual immersion teacher Jayro Alcantar-Armenta, who helps lead a program now serving more than 440 students. “It’s important to show students that their heritage is a source of pride.”

At Palm Springs High School, Spanish teacher Erika Omier organized the second-annual Hispanic Heritage Extravaganza Night, an event led by students themselves. “They’re researching, choreographing, presenting, and sharing personal stories,” Omier said. “It’s incredibly empowering and helps them take pride in their heritage while also learning about others.”

District leaders emphasize that the lessons extend well beyond the month of September. “When we celebrate our differences, we create a stronger, more united school culture,” officials said, noting the district’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Hispanic Heritage Month runs through Oct. 15, but educators say the goal is to keep the spirit of the celebration alive year-round.
