Christina Veselak Shares How Nutrition Can Transform Addiction Recovery
A fresh approach to addiction recovery is putting food at the center of healing. International bestselling author and licensed psychotherapist Christina Veselak joined NBC Palm Springs to discuss her new book, Eat: A Guide to Radiant Recovery, which highlights how nutrition and targeted amino acids can transform the recovery process.
Veselak explained that the brain plays a critical role in mood, behavior, and the ability to engage in recovery — yet it’s often left out of traditional treatment conversations. “Our brain’s job is to allow us to cope with stress gracefully, but to do that it must be fed optimally,” she said. “When we feed the brain the nutrients from the food we eat, everything can turn right side up for us.”
Her approach emphasizes real food and consistent protein intake, rather than ultra-processed foods or excess sugar. She recommends eating 20 grams of protein every three to four hours to stabilize blood sugar and support brain function. Examples include three eggs or a third-pound hamburger patty at each meal. According to Veselak, missing meals or eating only sugar is one of the biggest relapse triggers across all addictions, from alcohol to gambling.
Amino acids, found in protein, can provide even more immediate benefits. “Within 20 minutes the craving can go away, we can feel better, we can have energy or we can relax — whatever it is we were wanting the substance to do for us,” Veselak said.
For those seeking more information, Veselak’s nonprofit, EatingProteinSavesLives.org, provides resources for individuals and families navigating recovery with nutrition-based strategies.
Her message is clear: by feeding the brain the nutrients it needs, people in recovery can reduce cravings, strengthen their resilience, and lay a stronger foundation for long-term healing.
