FAA Extends Newark Airport Flight Limits Through October 2026

Travelers flying in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport will continue to face limits on flight arrivals and departures for another year.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday that the cap on operations at Newark will remain in place until October 2026. The restrictions were first imposed earlier this year after multiple communications and radar outages caused thousands of cancellations and delays.

“The goal of the reduced rates is to continue maintaining safety while alleviating flight delays due to staffing and equipment challenges, resulting in smoother travel into and out of Newark,” the FAA said in a statement.

Currently, the airport is limited to 72 takeoffs and landings per hour, up slightly from the previous limit but still well below the more than 80 flights per hour seen before the restrictions.

United Airlines, which operates a major hub at Newark, has supported the move. “The reduced operations, along with continued focus on technology upgrades and ATC staffing increases, are critical milestones toward Newark’s long-term operational certainty,” said CEO Scott Kirby.

FAA officials said improvements are being made. The Philadelphia air traffic control facility, which manages Newark’s traffic, has transitioned to a new fiber optic communications network. Staffing has also grown, with 22 fully certified controllers, five certified supervisors, and 27 others currently in training.

Despite these gains, the FAA determined that keeping flight limits in place for another year is necessary to ensure safety and minimize disruptions as long-term solutions continue to take hold.
