Trump Orders Probes Into Groups Accused of Supporting Political Violence

President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum Thursday directing federal agencies to expand investigations into organizations his administration suspects of supporting political violence.

The order, issued from the Oval Office, comes in the wake of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and other recent violent incidents, including a deadly shooting at an ICE facility in Dallas. Trump claimed without evidence that “wealthy people” are funding politically motivated violence.

“We’re going to get out there and we’re going to do a pretty big number on those people,” Trump said, pointing to what he called “radical, politically motivated groups.” The administration has previously designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, despite the group lacking centralized structure or leadership.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the effort would focus on “any organized group who is committing these crimes.” However, Trump later singled out liberal donors George Soros and Reid Hoffman, remarks that drew sharp criticism and fueled concerns that the directive could be used to target political opponents.

Stephen Miller, a senior White House official, argued that “an entire system of feeder organizations” is behind the unrest, calling it “terrorism on our soil.”

The Open Society Foundations, backed by Soros, rejected the accusations, calling them “politically motivated attacks on civil society” that threaten free speech and the First Amendment. Hoffman has not publicly responded.

Earlier in the day, Trump accused the “radical left” of provoking violence that could lead to right-wing retaliation. “It’ll be a point where other people won’t take it anymore, and that will not be good for the radical left,” Trump said.

Officials later confirmed that notes left by the ICE shooter expressed hatred for the federal government, but investigators found no evidence linking him to specific groups.

The memorandum has sparked debate over its potential reach, with critics warning it could blur the line between national security and political retaliation.
