Trump Imposes 100% Tariff on Imported Brand-Name Drugs to Boost U.S. Production

Starting next month, a new round of tariffs will take effect on imported brand-name or patented drugs. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that those drugs will be subject to a 100% tariff, a move designed to increase pressure on pharmaceutical companies to shift production to the United States.

According to the administration, the tariffs will not apply to drug makers currently investing in U.S.-based manufacturing plants. The goal is to strengthen domestic production of essential medicines and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.

The decision marks the latest in a series of aggressive trade policies by the Trump administration, which has frequently used tariffs to influence industries ranging from technology to agriculture. In this case, officials argue that boosting U.S.-based pharmaceutical production will not only support jobs but also secure the supply chain for critical medications.

Notably, generic drugs will not be affected by the new tariff policy. The administration did not mention any immediate plans to impose tariffs on lower-cost generics, which make up the bulk of prescriptions filled in the U.S.

Still, health experts and industry leaders warn that the steep tariffs on brand-name drugs could raise costs for patients in the short term, depending on how pharmaceutical companies and insurers absorb the added expenses.
