Thunderstorms Roll Through Palm Springs, Lightning Strikes Ignite Palm Trees
A fast-moving thunderstorm swept across the Coachella Valley Saturday afternoon, bringing rain, thunder, and lightning from east to west. The storm produced enough energy to spark multiple lightning strikes, one of which ignited three palm trees in South Palm Springs. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. near East Palm Canyon Drive and Farrell Drive, close to Manhattan in the Desert and the Desert Isle Resort. Video sent to our newsroom shows bright lightning bolts flashing in the sky while firefighters worked quickly to contain the palm tree fires. The total rainfall the Palm Springs International Airport received was just about a third of an inch of rainfall during the storm. While the total may seem small, the desert’s dry conditions make even modest precipitation significant, especially when paired with dangerous lightning activity. Saturday's storm was the latest reminder of the Valley’s unpredictable fall weather, where the combination of lingering monsoon moisture and unstable atmospheric conditions can spark sudden downpours. Officials urge residents to take extra caution during thunderstorms, avoid flooded roadways, and seek shelter indoors when lightning is in the area.
