Japanese Medical Professionals Visit Desert Hot Springs for Substance Use Treatment Study Tour

The Ranch Recovery Center in Desert Hot Springs is hosting a two-day study tour focused on substance use disorder treatment, welcoming medical professionals from across Japan who are eager to learn more about American approaches to recovery.

Among those attending is psychiatrist Yoichi Nakata, who made the 6,000-mile trip to the Coachella Valley. Nakata, himself a recovering alcoholic, says one of the biggest challenges in Japan is the stigma surrounding addiction. Many people, he explained, do not want to admit they have a substance use problem, making it more difficult to access care.

“The treatment of addiction is so advanced in this country compared to Japan,” Nakata shared, noting that U.S. programs often include medications that help curb cravings and encourage recovery, while cultural barriers in Japan lead many to conceal their struggles.

Leaders at the Ranch Recovery Center say the workshop is about sharing knowledge that can not only benefit people in the Coachella Valley, but also extend to communities around the world. The goal is to strengthen connections between substance abuse treatment and mental health services and to promote collaboration across borders.

For Nakata, the experience is also personal. He expressed gratitude for the insights gained and hopes to bring them home to improve treatment options in Japan, where he says many still suffer in silence.
