Anonymous Messages of Positivity Brighten Days in Rochester

In a time when the nation often feels divided, one person in upstate New York is quietly making a difference through a simple act of kindness. Along Long Pond Road and Trolley Boulevard in Gates, near Rochester, an old chalkboard has become a beacon of positivity.

Every day, the board features a new uplifting message — no politics, no controversy, just words meant to brighten spirits. For many residents, it has become a daily ritual to look for the fresh message. “It brightens up your day,” one passerby said. Another added, “It makes you feel warm and good when you see it.”

The anonymous author of the chalkboard affirmations has chosen to remain unknown, saying they want no recognition, only to bring a smile to people’s faces. The mystery has sparked conversation across the community and even led to posts of appreciation on the Gates ChiLi Facebook page, where neighbors share photos of the messages. Some residents have left behind gifts, cards, and their own notes of gratitude in return.

For many, the chalkboard has become a reminder of the importance of small acts of kindness in daily life. As one community member noted, “Maybe if everybody did something like that, what a better world it would be.”
