Experts Warn Against Improper Use of Cleaning Products, Share Safe Disinfection Tips

Cleaning and disinfecting are essential steps to stop the spread of germs, but experts warn that some cleaning products may be harmful if not used properly.

According to the Environmental Working Group, more than 2,000 cleaning products in the U.S. contain chemicals linked to asthma, cancer, or chemical burns. Health experts stress that in most situations, cleaning with soap and water is enough to remove most germs from surfaces. However, if someone in your home has been sick, or if a visitor recently brought an illness into your household, the CDC says diluted household bleach can be an effective disinfectant.

For safe use, the CDC recommends regular, unscented household bleach containing between 5 and 9 percent sodium hypochlorite. Laundry or splashless bleach is not appropriate for disinfecting. Bleach or any disinfectant should never be mixed with other cleaning products, as this can release harmful vapors. Proper ventilation, such as opening windows, is important while disinfecting, and some products may require gloves or eye protection.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, host of the Chasing Life podcast, advises looking for the EPA’s Safer Choice label or checking their online database when buying replacement cleaning products. He also recommends natural alternatives such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice, along with regular vacuuming to remove toxic chemicals that can accumulate in dust.
