HHS Moves to Block Harvard From Federal Research Grants Amid Anti-Semitism Dispute

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has begun proceedings to block Harvard University from receiving future federal research grants, intensifying a battle between the federal government and one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions.

The move comes three months after HHS determined that Harvard violated civil rights law by failing to adequately address anti-Semitism on campus. University officials argue the school has taken significant steps to confront the issue, but the Trump administration has vowed to crack down on what it calls “woke ideology” in higher education.

Billions of dollars in federal research funding for Harvard were frozen earlier this year, but a federal judge ruled the freeze illegal. The judge said the government was using anti-Semitism concerns as a pretext for broader action against Harvard and other elite universities.

Despite that ruling, the administration is expected to appeal, keeping the future of Harvard’s federal research funding uncertain. The outcome could have major implications for the university’s research programs and for the wider debate over political influence on higher education.
