Palm Desert Man’s Felony Animal Cruelty Charge Reduced to Misdemeanor

Tonight, NBC Palm Springs takes you inside the courtroom at Larson Justice Center in Indio, where Michael McCutcheon, a Palm Desert resident, faced a preliminary hearing on animal cruelty charges. McCutcheon was originally charged with a felony after striking a Canadian goose multiple times with a golf club at Chaparral Country Club in March and leaving the injured bird in a dumpster. Animal services later euthanized the goose.

During today’s hearing, retired Judge Gregory Olson ruled the charge would be reduced to a misdemeanor, a decision that left many community members frustrated. Judge Olson noted that McCutcheon did not act with premeditation but acknowledged his actions were inappropriate. He also admitted he had not watched the full surveillance video due to its graphic nature.

Courtroom observers, however, expressed anger over what they see as leniency. “This is cruelty. This is torture. This fits all the definitions of a felony,” said local resident Blodgett, who was in attendance.

Judge Olson ordered McCutcheon to complete 16 hours of animal cruelty education, perform 20 volunteer hours at an animal shelter, and pay $150 in restitution. Sentencing is scheduled for next March, when a different judge is expected to preside.

The case has drawn strong reactions across the Coachella Valley, with many residents calling for tougher accountability in cases of animal abuse.
