How the Government Shutdown Could Impact Your Wallet
The government shutdown may not only affect Washington politics — it could impact your wallet directly.
Historically, shutdowns have had limited long-term impact on the overall U.S. economy. But analysts say the immediate toll on individuals can be severe, particularly for government workers furloughed without pay until the shutdown ends.
With the labor market already showing signs of weakness, some experts warn this time could be different. “This is a precarious time … having the lack of visibility on the job market is extremely inopportune,” said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.
One key concern is the release of economic data. The Labor Department’s monthly jobs report, scheduled for Friday, could be delayed — leaving businesses, economists, and even the Federal Reserve without critical information.
Laura Ulrich, director of economic research at Indeed, noted that uncertainty tends to slow down both consumer and business decisions. “This is just one more thing to add to that list of items that are making the economy a bit uncertain at this point,” she said.
Adding to the concern, the Trump administration has warned the shutdown could lead to permanent cuts in the federal workforce, potentially putting more job seekers on the market at a fragile time for employment.
As the shutdown continues, economists stress that while the overall economy may weather the storm, individuals could feel the pinch much sooner.
