Public Tours Begin at Obama Presidential Center Grounds in Chicago

After nearly a decade of planning and construction, the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s Jackson Park is moving closer to completion — and for the first time, members of the public got a chance to tour the site.

On Tuesday night, dozens of neighbors gathered for a special look at the grounds, expressing pride in a project many say represents hope for their community. “It gives me great pride, joy … this is something that I’m actually being a part of in the community,” one attendee shared.

The sprawling campus will feature a museum dedicated to the nation’s 44th president, a large auditorium, and even a branch of the Chicago Public Library. In honor of former First Lady Michelle Obama, a fruit and vegetable garden will also be part of the center. “This should be an economic catalyst for the south side of Chicago, and so that’s my hope,” one official said.

For local residents, the project is about more than architecture — it’s about opportunity and inspiration for the next generation. “My son was two and a half when I moved here. He’s now 19, so to see something as beautiful as this, it touches my heart,” one parent said.

While the public marveled at the exterior of the center, the Obama Foundation says the vision goes far beyond tourism, aiming to fuel long-term community growth and pride. And as for Barack Obama himself, one feature reportedly near the top of his list is the on-site basketball courts.

The Obama Presidential Center is slated to open in 2026.
