Social Security Offices in Palm Springs and Indio Turn Away Walk-Ins Amid Shutdown
The effects of the government shutdown are hitting home in the Coachella Valley, where Social Security offices in Palm Springs and Indio are turning away walk-in visitors.
Only people with pre-scheduled appointments were able to get help Monday — and even those appointments came with limited services. Staff provided assistance with applications for benefits, appeals, and address changes, but little beyond that.
One Palm Springs resident who was turned away expressed frustration and concern, saying he relies heavily on his benefits.
“This is urgent. This is a very important department. A lot of people are depending on their services, and they’re not even doing the simple thing of providing me a duplicate of my benefits,” he said.
The shutdown is also impacting other areas of daily life. At Joshua Tree National Park, visitor centers at Black Rock and Cottonwood have closed. But officials at Palm Springs International Airport say operations there remain unaffected, since the airport is locally owned and operated.
For now, locals who need Social Security services without an appointment will have to wait until the shutdown ends — or until federal funding is restored.
