Government Shutdown Continues as Lawmakers Remain at Impasse

The federal government shutdown continues with no immediate resolution in sight, as senators remain out of session Thursday with no opportunity for votes that could reopen the government.

Both Democrats and Republicans continue to place blame on the opposing party for the shutdown, with neither side showing signs of budging on key issues. The Senate is scheduled to hold its next vote Friday afternoon.

At the center of the dispute is healthcare policy, including disagreements over Medicaid cuts and tax credits that help millions of Americans afford health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Federal workers are bracing for the impact, with the Congressional Budget Office estimating that approximately 750,000 federal employees could be furloughed each day the shutdown continues. Many government workers express concern about performing their duties without pay while Americans worry about access to essential services and benefits.
