New Generation of Drag Performers Redefines the Desert Scene

Palm Springs has long embraced drag and alternative art forms, but a new generation of performers is stepping into the spotlight, redefining the scene for the future.

NBC Palm Springs’ Kai Beach attended a showcase at Bart Lounge in Cathedral City, where young kings and queens gathered backstage to share makeup, stories, and support before performing. Hosted by Miss Cherry Superstar, the night featured a gothic drag theme, drawing a packed crowd to celebrate “astrology night.”

“This event is like a celebration of young queerness in the alternative scene,” one performer said. “It feels like a rebranding of what people think of when they think of Palm Springs.”

In recent years, drag performers have faced heightened negativity across the country. But the desert’s rising drag talent says their focus remains on positivity, community, and self-expression. “I think it scares some people,” one artist noted. “But for us, it’s about accepting everyone, having a good time, and enjoying ourselves.”

The show also highlighted a sense of gratitude to the pioneers of Palm Springs’ drag culture. “Thank you to all my elder queers, my trans sisters, for creating the space for us and paving the way,” a performer told the crowd.

As this new generation redefines what drag looks like in the desert, they say the art form is not about costumes or makeup, but about authenticity and identity. “I’m not defined by the makeup I put on. I’m not defined by the clothes I wear. I’m defined by the person that I am.”
