No Criminal Charges for Palm Springs Parade Crash; Civil Suits Expected

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office announced it will not pursue criminal charges in connection to the crash that injured at least 10 people during last December’s Festival of Lights Parade in Palm Springs.

The incident involved Palm Springs Police Officer Ken Merenda, who lost control of his motorcycle after performing an unapproved stunt while working the event. The crash sent the motorcycle into the crowd, leading to multiple injuries.

An investigation conducted by the California Highway Patrol was forwarded to the DA’s office, but officials have confirmed that the matter will now be addressed through civil, not criminal, proceedings.

An internal review by the Palm Springs Police Department revealed that four officers, including Merenda, had performed stunts without proper training or authorization during the parade. As a result, the department has introduced new policies restricting speed during public events and requiring a designated event supervisor to oversee operations.

Officer Merenda is currently on administrative leave pending further review.

An attorney representing several victims confirmed to NBC Palm Springs that their clients plan to file lawsuits against the City of Palm Springs, signaling the beginning of what could be a lengthy civil legal process.

City officials and police representatives have yet to comment on the potential lawsuits or provide updates on Officer Merenda’s employment status.

The annual Festival of Lights Parade, a cherished local tradition, has faced scrutiny in the aftermath of the crash, raising concerns about public safety protocols during large-scale community events.
