White House Warns of Job Cuts as Government Shutdown Impacts Grow

The White House is forecasting significant cuts and job losses that could begin as soon as today, as the early impacts of the federal government shutdown are already being felt nationwide.

On day three of the shutdown, President Donald Trump met with Russ Vought, the architect of his plan to shrink the federal government. The president later wrote that Vought would recommend which “Democrat agencies” to cut, adding, “I can’t believe the radical left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity.”

That statement sparked fresh concerns over layoffs, with officials warning that cuts could number in the thousands. Among those already on edge is Jenna Horton, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, who is currently furloughed. “We’re not allowed to work, which is tough because most of us are really passionate about what we do,” Horton said.

Meanwhile, federal employees — including members of the military — are working without pay. In Kansas, a food bank near Fort Leavenworth is preparing for an influx of families in need. “That’s panic on real military families,” one organizer said.

As the shutdown drags on, Congress remains at an impasse. Senate Republican leadership insists there is “nothing to negotiate,” while Democrats, including Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are demanding action. “Let’s end this shutdown. Let’s get people fed and let’s get these paychecks back flowing,” she said.

With no signs of progress on Capitol Hill, the stalemate leaves millions of Americans facing growing uncertainty.
