Conservative Influencer Nick Sortor’s Arrest Outside Portland ICE Building Sparks Federal Investigation

A high-profile arrest outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Portland has sparked national attention and a federal investigation.

Conservative influencer Nick Sortor, 27, of Washington, D.C., was arrested late Thursday night on suspicion of second-degree disorderly conduct after clashes broke out near the ICE building in South Portland. Two Oregon residents were also taken into custody. Sortor was released without bond early Friday, but his case has already escalated beyond local law enforcement.

The Justice Department confirmed it has opened an investigation into the arrest, supervised by Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon. In a letter to Portland officials, Dhillon raised concerns that Sortor’s detention could amount to “potential viewpoint discrimination” and requested case materials by October 10.

Sortor, who has 1.2 million followers on X, accused Portland police of bowing to “violent Antifa thugs.” Portland’s Police Bureau pushed back, stating arrests were based on observed behavior and not political affiliation or profile.

The controversy has drawn immediate reaction from the Trump administration. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump has directed his team to review federal funding for Portland, while DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed more federal resources will be sent “immediately.”

The arrest came just hours before a federal judge was set to hear arguments over Trump’s order to deploy 200 National Guard troops to Portland. Local and state officials are suing, claiming the move infringes on Oregon’s authority to manage law enforcement.

Sortor gained national attention in 2023 for on-the-ground coverage of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment and later for reporting on the Maui wildfires. More recently, he has focused on immigration enforcement protests and support for conservative causes.

With federal scrutiny now focused on his arrest, Portland remains in the spotlight as both a symbolic and strategic battleground in the White House’s immigration crackdown.
