FDOT Crews Arrive in Miami Beach to Remove Rainbow Crosswalk on Ocean Drive
Crews from the Florida Department of Transportation arrived in Miami Beach Sunday evening to begin preparations for removing the city’s rainbow crosswalks.
The decision follows the City of Miami Beach’s failed appeal to keep the crosswalk on Ocean Drive, which city officials had hoped to preserve as a symbol of inclusivity and Pride. The removal stems from a new Florida law that requires cities across the state to eliminate rainbow-painted sidewalks, which FDOT has labeled potential safety hazards and distractions for drivers.
The agency, operating under the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis, identified more than 400 locations statewide where crosswalks and other street art must be removed. Cities that fail to comply face the risk of losing state transportation funding.
Miami Beach had previously attempted to protect its crosswalk by passing a resolution to rename the portion of Ocean Drive where it is located as “Pride Street.” Despite those efforts, the state ordered its removal by early September.
Other Florida cities, including Orlando and Key West, have pushed back by repainting or restoring their Pride-themed crosswalks after FDOT’s removals. Supporters of the rainbow crosswalks say they represent inclusion and belonging for the LGBTQ+ and Black communities, while opponents cite road safety concerns.
