First of Three Supermoons Lights Up the Sky with October’s Harvest Moon

The Harvest Moon will glow brightly over the Coachella Valley tonight, marking the first of three consecutive supermoons this season.

This celestial event occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit, making it appear larger and more luminous than usual. The Harvest Moon gets its name from its timing — it’s the full moon closest to the first day of fall. Historically, its bright light helped farmers work late into the night to finish gathering crops before the arrival of winter.

Skywatchers can expect the moon to appear especially striking just after sunset and into the early morning hours. Tonight’s supermoon will be followed by two more in the coming months, giving stargazers plenty to look forward to this fall.

For the best view, head outdoors away from city lights and enjoy the natural glow of the Harvest Moon lighting up the autumn night sky.
