Palm Springs Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile Virus
Palm Springs has confirmed its first West Nile Virus-positive mosquito sample of the year. The infected mosquito was collected near South Camino Real and East La Verne Way, marking one of 11 positive samples found across the Coachella Valley so far this year.
In response to the detection, mosquito control treatments began Friday in the affected area. Officials are using organic, EPA-approved products that pose no risk to humans, pets, or other wildlife.
Treatment operations in Palm Springs will run nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for one week, beginning Monday. The applications will be conducted both aerially and from truck-mounted equipment.
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is urging residents to eliminate standing water around their properties, as these areas serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The district also recommends using EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors.

West Nile Virus is transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause symptoms ranging from mild flu-like illness to serious neurological complications in severe cases.
