Faith-Based Communities Step Up to Support Furloughed Workers During Government Shutdown
Faith-based communities across the nation are rallying to help those hit hardest by the ongoing government shutdown. Churches are opening their doors to provide meals, financial guidance, and emotional support for furloughed workers who are struggling to make ends meet.
At the City of Praise church, hundreds gathered for a community resource and job fair that offered financial literacy classes, employment opportunities, and mental health counseling. Among the attendees was FEMA employee Stacey Eldridge, who has been furloughed and says the support from her church community has been life-changing.
“Community is everything,” Eldridge said. “We’re not in this by ourselves, and knowing that I have a church family and friends here who care makes all the difference.”
Church leaders say their mission is to fill the gaps while the government remains closed. “When the government shuts down, the church has to step up,” said one organizer. “We have opportunities to help people pay utility bills, cover basic needs, and remind them they’re not alone.”
As the shutdown continues, many workers remain uncertain about their finances, but faith leaders hope their efforts will keep spirits high. Eldridge says her faith and her community keep her hopeful during this difficult time.
“If we keep our arms linked and our circles tight, there’s nothing we can’t get through,” she said.
