Palm Springs Firefighters Teach Third Graders Life-Saving Skills During Fire Prevention Week
This week marks National Fire Prevention Week, and the Palm Springs Fire Department is taking the opportunity to go beyond awareness—bringing life-saving lessons directly to the community's youngest members.
On Thursday morning, third-grade students at Vista Del Monte Elementary School got a special visit from the department's Community Risk Reduction Team. Their goal: to give children practical fire safety knowledge they can carry with them for life.
The highlight of the visit was the department’s mobile fire safety house, a hands-on learning tool that simulates a smoke-filled environment in a safe and controlled way. Firefighters used it to demonstrate how quickly smoke can fill a room and taught students crucial techniques like staying low to the ground, checking doors for heat, and having a clear family escape plan.
Fire Chief Paul Alvarado explained why the department prioritizes this type of outreach, especially during Fire Prevention Week.
The children engaged eagerly with the firefighters and seemed to enjoy the experience, even while learning about such serious topics. The program aims not just to educate the kids but also to encourage them to take what they’ve learned home and start conversations with their families about fire safety.
If you're interested in learning more about fire prevention, the Palm Springs Fire Department encourages community members to reach out directly or stop by their local fire station.
Because when it comes to fire emergencies, knowledge isn’t just power—it can save lives.
