Plumbers, Electricians, and Technicians Turn to ChatGPT and AI Tools to Boost Efficiency

Artificial intelligence is making its way into blue-collar America — and even plumbers are embracing it.

At Oak Creek Plumbing & Remodeling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, technicians now carry tablets equipped with ChatGPT alongside their traditional toolkits. The AI platform helps them create invoices, draft work proposals, and even troubleshoot complex plumbing issues.

“It’s definitely been worth the investment,” said company president Dan Callies. “Some of our older guys have learned to ask ChatGPT the right questions, and they’re kind of amazed with some of the answers it comes up with.”

Callies said the tool has made the company more efficient and allowed workers to focus on customer service rather than paperwork.

Across the country, similar stories are emerging. In Niceville, Florida, Gulfshore Air Conditioning & Heating uses AI from start to finish — automating service requests, scheduling, and diagnosing technical issues in seconds. “It used to take five manuals to find the right information,” said marketing and IT manager Krista Landen.

A survey by Housecall Pro found that over 70% of tradespeople in North America have tried AI tools, and about 40% actively use them. Plumbers reported the most business growth from AI, while electricians ranked highest in satisfaction.

Experts say automation is helping trade professionals work smarter, not harder. “If administrative tasks can be automated, that allows workers to lean into the parts of the job they actually enjoy,” said economist Laura Ullrich of Indeed.

AI tools are also boosting revenue. Gulfshore reported a $370,000 increase in income within a month of implementing AI-driven marketing software, along with an extra $150 in revenue per service call.

For now, experts say AI isn’t replacing skilled tradespeople — it’s simply changing how they work. “All of our technicians are running more efficiently, and they’re less stressed,” Landen said. “I feel like I am a real-life Jetson living in the future.”
