Steph Curry Partners with Read With Me Volunteers to Boost Literacy Across the Coachella Valley

Millions of Americans struggle with literacy, and a Coachella Valley nonprofit is working to change that with help from NBA All-Star Steph Curry. Read With Me Volunteers, an organization dedicated to improving literacy among local students, is hosting a special Literacy Awareness Night at the Mary Pickford Theater in Cathedral City.

The event, scheduled for Monday, October 20 at 6 p.m., will feature a screening of the documentary Sentenced, which explores how literacy can transform lives — and how the lack of it can hold people back. Attendees will also be invited to take part in a panel discussion after the film. Tickets are $39 and include a movie ticket, drink, and snack.

“Most of the students we work with are at least two years behind in their literacy scores,” said Sean Webb, director of Read With Me Volunteers. “This event is about raising awareness and helping the community understand how vital reading is to success. As we always say, readers are leaders.”

The collaboration with Curry aims to shine a national spotlight on literacy challenges while inspiring more local volunteers to get involved. Webb hopes the event will motivate attendees to take action and help improve literacy rates not only across the Coachella Valley but across the nation.

“I want people to see what happens when someone can’t read — and also what happens when they can,” Webb said.
