Coachella Valley Cold Cases: Families Still Seeking Justice 15 Years After Deadly Cathedral City Shooting
Over the past few decades, several homicide cases in the Coachella Valley have remained unsolved — leaving families waiting years, sometimes decades, for justice. One of the most haunting cases dates back 15 years to a deadly shooting in Cathedral City’s Dream Homes neighborhood.
It was 2010 when 16-year-old Yanize Mora and Augustine Garcia were shot and killed. Mora’s two-month-old son was also struck by gunfire but survived. The shooting left deep scars on several local families — and to this day, no one has been held accountable.
“I don’t want street justice. I want someone to go to prison,” said a family member. “He has to be raised without his mother who loved him very much.”
Law enforcement officials say someone out there likely holds the key to solving the case. “With a case like this, the biggest key is for people who know information — those who were there or even loosely affiliated — to come forward,” one investigator told NBC Palm Springs.
NBC Palm Springs’ special report, Coachella Valley Cold Cases, revisits this case and two other unsolved local homicides. The half-hour special explores what investigators have uncovered, how families continue to cope with their loss, and what the community can do to help bring justice to the victims.
Coachella Valley Cold Cases airs Tuesday, October 21, after NBA’s opening night, right here on NBC Palm Springs.
